Harris Law, we encourage giving back to the community and investing ourselves
in passion projects that make the world outside our office a better place. For
Rebekkah J. Mouw, Family Law attorney, that passion is fostering and
volunteering for Almost Home Canine Rescue. But Almost Home Canine Rescue isn’t
the only organization that encourages saving dogs that have been abandoned,
neglected, or abused prior to their time with the Rescue, other local charities
like Sioux Empire Pit Rescue and B-Squad Rescue do this self-less work as well.
So how
do these organization work? They rely on volunteers to help our furry friends
in our community and surrounding areas.
Volunteers are not just asked to help support the mission through their
time or treasure, but also to foster our furry friends that are looking for
their forever home in their own homes. Without the help of volunteer foster
families, these organizations may not exist.
Foster Volunteers for these organizations have been concerned the last few years over an ongoing lawsuit; making new and old foster families more hesitant to open their homes. The lawsuit centered around an incident with a foster family and a foster pet at a state park. After years of litigation, the South Dakota Supreme Court concluded that there is no “breed specific duty of care” owed to pets. This ruling helps strengthen the foster pet community and organizations in our area. So volunteers can breathe easier knowing our court system has their backs!
