Why do you do what you do?
Family is everything to me. I grew up in a big family where my 32 cousins and I would dress up every Christmas in our pajamas and eagerly await Christmas morning, where Thanksgivings were filled with turkey and laughter (…and maybe a few naps), and where my uncles would move my tent into the corn field every fourth of July. I am incredibly fortunate to have grown up in the family I did and to have been raised with the values I still hold true today. But life sometimes throws a few curveballs. My senior year of high school, when most children were planning for their futures and looking at dorm room furniture, I was grieving the loss of my father who unexpectedly passed away. I saw first-hand the grief and chaos that losing a loved one causes. I always thought there had to be a better way. A better way to protect families and businesses when unexpected life events occur. A better way to guide people through the often overly complex legal world. So, I decided to find one. I followed this passion to law school and eventually to founding Harris Law & Co. Growing up with small town values and a big heart drives the purpose and culture of my team. We want to ensure that we are servants to our community, that we continually learn and find ways to better serve others, and that every day we help arm families and businesses with the information they need to better protect themselves and their loved ones from life’s unexpected events.
Alicia James joined our team as a legal assistant. She works with our team on family law matters, business succession planning, and probate/trust administration. 20+ years of experience in the legal field, working for both law firms and the courthouse, has honed Alicia’s talent for switching between matters seamlessly while developing her skill for maintaining focus on details and great communication.
Alicia has lived in the Sioux Falls area since 1990. When she is not spending time cooking large meals for her friends and family, she is traveling and exploring new places and cultures with her husband. One of her favorite things to do is just get in the car and take off with no destination in mind.
Why do you do what you do?
Everyone goes through difficult times during life that bring uncertainty and fear. I find fulfillment helping people through these hard times, whether it is a divorce, a custody battle, or the death of a loved one. I am only a small piece of their story, but I can be a guide for them and help them navigate to the other side. Harris Law & Co.’s passion for empathy, community, and culture allows me to continue finding fulfillment through my work, and I am grateful to be part of the team.
LEGAL ASSISTANT INTERN
Growing the next generation of leaders in our community is important. We believe in Peyton and look forward to seeing her grow on her journey. Peyton Baum joined our team as a high school intern. She works primarily with our Estate Planning and Business Law team. Peyton is a fast learner and thrives when she is helping others. Peyton will graduate from Harrisburg High School in May of 2022. In school, she helps her fellow classmates with their studies, is learning to speak Spanish, and is an active debate team member. Out of school, she not only interns at Harris Law & Co., but she also maintains a part-time job at a pharmacy. Peyton has a passion for education and is constantly looking for new opportunities to grow her knowledge base. When she is not helping our team, she can be found at the gym, baking, or spending time with friends and family. She also enjoys giving back to the Sioux Falls community and has volunteered at the Banquet and also some community projects such as trash cleanup.
Why do you do what you do?
Family and friends are very important to me. Christmas with my family is filled with dressing up, taking photos, and going to church. Thanksgiving brings my grandma’s amazing food and fun with football rivalries. But life does not always go as planned. Experiencing grief at a young age gave me a passion to help others through life’s difficult moments. This passion has led me to pursue a legal internship to explore how I can best serve my community, my family, and those that need protection.
